Imoni (芋煮) (by the family)

We experienced our first Imoni party in Japan. We had walked to the river near us several times and always wondered why it was full of people grilling and spending time together.  Well, now we know that it's because that's the place to gather around, socialise and grill or cook pots of soup :).

Imoni (芋煮), as we found out, is a soup which consists of local potato (taro root), carrots, leak, mushrooms, tofu as well as meat such as pork or beef. Imoni is traditionally eaten during autumn (around September-October) in this region of Japan (Tōhoku region).

We spend a whole day by the Hirosegawa river bank, underneath the Ushigoe bridge, and helped in preparing these local Imoni -soups. Which were extremely tasty! We had the Miyagi -prefecture soup as well as the Yamagata -prefecture soup. These tasted different but both were very nice. We liked the soup so much that we decided to buy all the ingredients to do the soup at home :). Let's see how that turns out...
